Role of Employee Referrals Industry Perspective

Role of Employee Referrals Industry Perspective Role of Employee Referrals Industry Perspective While studies related to employee referral programs have mostly focused on its use and application in the Information Technology industry, its usage is in fact notlage limited to any one particular industry or vertical but spread out across almost all industries. The article further covers how employee referral programs have benefited organizations in industries such as healthcare, retail, consulting and ecommerce and played an important role in their success. The healthcare industry has always suffered from a shortage of skilled staff limiting growth of the industry as a whole. Referral programs have proven to be a highly effective means of hiring in this highly competitive industry. Seventy-eight percent of respondents who participated in The Bernard Hodes Group Healthcare Talent Metricsranked employee referrals as one of the top five highest-yielding sources of Registered Nurse hires . Also, The Employee Referral Index Report 2013 shows that referrals were the leading external source of hires for the healthcare industry.A mobile workforce that is typically not tied to the desk presents one of the biggest challenges in successfully implementing an employee referral program in healthcare organizations. Fortunately, with the integration of mobile capabilities within the referral technology, healthcare employees can access the referral platform from any device anywhere and at any time. Healthcare organizations have also come out with mobile referral websites as well as technology to make it extremely easy and convenient for healthcare employees to share job postings as well as upload resumes zugnglich from their smart phones to give a further push to their employee referral program. The retail industry has always preferred hiring through employee referrals more than any other hiring source as referrals tend to be hired and trained much faster and get productive much more effectively. Nowadays, most retail organizations have taken to social media in a big way to build their presence and have also integrated social media capabilities into their referral platform to make it easy for employees to share jobs online as well as reach out to their online circle to spread the word. Talbots, a leading retail brand in the U.S., recently revamped its referral program to a completely automated and social media integrated program using Zalp.A relatively new yet rapidly growing industry, the ecommerce or online retail industry has been quickest to capitalize on the advantages offered by employee referrals in terms of access to a global pool of high quality candidates without incurring huge costs. Ecommerce industry relies heavily on technology and internet savvy individuals who rely heavily on word of mouth references to purchase goods or services. Referral programs where employees act as the medium between potential candidates and employer work perfectly to attract the kind of talent they are looking for. Moreover, since ecommerce industry generally works on low margins, they typically do not have deep pockets to spend on recruitment and prefer to hire through referrals to keep recruiting expenses within control. In the world of professional services like consulting and accounting, employee referrals, in fact, are the driving force behind the entire recruiting strategy for organizations. Businesses like Deloitte, for instance, use referral programs extensively to ensure that more than 40 percent of its annual hiring is through employee referrals and the aim is to take that percentage even higher. Accenture, one of the biggest names in the consulting and accounting industry, is one of the pioneers in the use of employee referrals to drive talent acquisition. Through the use of innovative techniques like gamification with referral cards, which allow employees to track online how well they are stacking up on referral scores visvis other em ployees, they have managed to keep employees excited about the programKeith Halperin, a senior recruiting consultant, adds Throughout my career, I have been working with highly diverse clients, from established Fortune 500 firms through new 20-person start-ups. Employee referrals, once the neglected step child of Recruiting, are now increasingly discussed as being the most cost-effective means of recruiting quality candidates, while simultaneously increasing employees morale. Employee referrals can provide 40-55% of hires if designed, implemented, and managed in the right way. When created with the input and buy-in of the existing Recruiting staff, ERPs can result in dramatic improvements in Recruitings hires. The above are just a few instances of how employee referrals are helping shape the recruiting strategy across industries. It is now used extensively irrespective of whether you are hiring a head of a company or factory level worker or even a highly skilled healthcare practitio ner.

5 women in business share their biggest face plants

5 women in business share their biggest face plants5 women in business share their biggest face plantsIf you ask any entrepreneur, theyll tell you how many times they had to fall down before getting back up. Of all those pitfalls, theres probably one (or two or three) that felt more like faceplants than stumbles. Part of growing as a professional - and as an entrepreneur, if thats your career path - is figuring out how to learn from your mistakes. bedrngnis only does it make you a stronger leader, but it encourages you to listen to your instincts and to spend more time focusing on areas of improvement. If you made a big mistake or youre in the middle of a huge transition, let these face-plant stories inspire you to keep going. Youve got this, after all.I caused a problem with our cash flowBasic Outfitters, a mens clothing company featured on Shark Tank, had some issues with cash flow in its early stages, said Laura Dweck, the creative director and co-founder. We over projected our inventory buys and invested too much money into product, she said. It became our biggest challenge as it tied up our cash flow. Though a tricky situation, it helped her to prepare for the future and become a stronger, smarter leader, she said.It taught me the importance of planning inventory buys and the value of leveraging my network and contacts Id made throughout my career, she said. In hindsight, it was a blessing that we had all this inventory on kralle because when we aired on Shark Tank, we were able to capture the wave and fulfill all those orders due to the excess inventory we had. It taught me that the one thing that can seem like the biggest challenge can turn into the biggest blessing.I embarrassed myself in front of 100 clientsThough Claire Fountain, the founder and CEO of TrillYoga, has an unconventional, non-judgemental teaching style, there was still a moment where she felt uncomfortable. Or, rather, a piece of technology she often struggles with microphones. More th an once I have walked too close to the speakers during class and blasted my poor class - of more than 100 people in NYC one time - with this awful loud noise, she said. Like, grab your soul, loud noise. This might sound minor, but for me, having this horrid noise disrupt my class felt like it could be the kicker for if someone liked it or not, and decided to come back ever again, or tell others to never attend. Peoples opinions of your class can be a huge thing and can make or break an instructors career in this industry. What have these face plants taught her? To let it go, she said.I have pretty bad social anxiety and am in front of lots of people often, sometimes even on camera, so instead of worrying or obsessing over mistakes or letting that anxiety and fear kick in, I turn on my confidence and self-assuredness, she said. I practice affirmations day-to-day while building a confidence that can roll with the punches, because we are all human. I remind myself that even the most i ntelligent, successful, and accomplished people make mistakes, yet their lives go on, so I accept myself as human and build my confidence from the inside out.I fell too in love with the idea, not with the workA few years ago, Kimberly Walker created a site called Vinquiz, aiming to pair wine to customers personalities and have it delivered to their doors. But while she was obsessed with the idea, she didnt plan for the next steps. I neglected the long game, which would have clearly shown me the margins were too thin to be worth all the effort, she said. And while she face-planted head-first on that company, her new company, The Vanity Projects, which provide wine wipes, in addition to other goods, is off to a smart start. I learned not to fall in love with ideas until Ive thought them through to exit strategy, she said. I also always consult with mentors and colleagues who dont mind telling me an idea stinks, and challenge my thoughts on why it will be successful.I didnt stand up fo r myselfFor Erin Motz, co-founder of Bad Yogi, a yoga and lifestyle brand, face planting was a common occurrence in her first years of business. How so? She didnt develop the confidence she needed to demand to lead her success, she said.I used to be extremely hesitant to stand up for myself and defend my business, she said. For instance, instead of making sure we were paid on time from partners, Id be worried about ruffling feathers. I was so afraid of coming off as not nice or disagreeable that I repeatedly let people walk all over me, and that habit resulted in many, many epic faceplants that were very difficult to recover from.Through the trials of being an entrepreneur, she realized that sometimes, business isnt pretty or easy, she said.If someone youre working with is being difficult, its OK to match their energy sometimes, she said. I learned that Im entitled to do whats best for me and my business even if that makes someone else think of me as less than nice and gentle. I lea rned that I want to be the woman who gets sh*t done more than I want to be the woman whos sweet and demure no matter what.I didnt follow my gutYour tummy might not have a seat at the table, but its probably speaking louder at board meetings than you realize. For Taylor Wilkinson, owner of Taylor Wilkinson Designs, a contemporary jewelry brand, ignoring that little inkling in the back of her head was a face-plant she said she felt over and over again. Im still learning how to be in the business Im in, but nine out of 10 times, Ive doubted myself and instead taken outside direction, things havent turned out really any better, she said. I think women who are young in their process - no matter how old they are - and starting their own companies are innately hesitant, if not sometimes fearful, of questioning those who have been in business longer or know more about the subject matter. There is truth to a womans intuition. In business, in life, listening to my own voice, trusting my own instincts, believing in my product - thats really when the good stuff starts happening.

Improving Lives with SolarPowered Water Pumps

Improving Lives with SolarPowered Water Pumps Improving Lives with SolarPowered Water Pumps Improving Lives with Solar-Powered Water PumpsRecent MIT engineering graduates Katherine Taylor and Kevin Simon are hoping to help bring much needed waterinexpensivelyto some 23 million small-acreage farmers in eastern India because their livelihoods depend on good production. While there are excellent water resources in the Ganges River basin, including a high water table, ansicht farmers typically growing on an acre or less of land have no affordable way to get water to their crops. At first, Taylor, who earned her masters degree in mechanical engineering in 2015 from MIT and is a fellow at the Tata Center for Technology and Design and Simon, another Tata Fellow and also recent masters recipient in systems engineering, began exploring drip irrigation. Taylors thesis work involved designing a drip emitter that functions under very low pressure, which would cut operating pressure and costs. But they soon realized that the $1,000 or more installation cost was too expensive for the farmers. An assembleuchtdiode pump. Image Dan DorschThe Tata Center, part of the MIT Energy Initiative founded in 2012, has a research and education mission of training engineers and entrepreneurs to tackle challenges of resource-constrained communities in India and other developing areas and come up with relevant, practical solutions. The team, led by ME Assistant Professor Amos Winter, which also includes Marcos Esparza, who earned his bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from MIT this year, changed directions and began exploring pumps powered by solar, ideal for this purpose. Says Taylor Its a great feedback loop. The more sun, the higher the radiance and the hotter it is, the more power you get to the pump. But for a variety of reasons, no solar pump had been designed to meet their needs. The only irrigation option for farmers has been costly, inefficient diesel pumps because of lack of acc ess to an electrical grid. That has meant many cultivate their land only when rain is plentiful because of the prohibitive costs of diesel fuel. It is believed that less than 5 percent of the land is planted during the dry season even though the land is very fertile and could be used year-round with proper irrigation.Farmers at the Sombra pilot site demonstrating platzdeckchenup of pump after training led by Kevin Simon. Image Katherine TaylorTaylor and Simon have been traveling to India once or twice a year since 2013, talking to farmers and learning the conditions under which the pumps will be used. After two years, the team early this year filled suitcases with pumps, tools, and replacement parts and set up on location to build a pump that would exceed the performance standards of current models while being affordable, robust, and entirely solar-powered.It was really in-the-field engineering, Taylor says. After building and testing the pump, farmers were trained in its use, and s urprisingly found it much easier to operate than the diesel pump. The pump has been operating at efficiencies of about 30 percent to 35 percent, higher than the 10 percent to 20 percent of the diesel pumps, which made fuel costs very high.A key time will be in the summer when the team returns to the area just as the dry season ends to assess how much land was cultivated during the dry period. Another reason for the trip is to conduct many more interviews with the farmers. We think we will learn a great deal, says Simon. We only had time to do about four or five the last time because we were focusing on the technical side.Simon says much of the challenge has been learning about the farmers lives and whats relevant to them. There is only so much we can understand on short visits, he says. To help understand the farmers lifestyles and also to be able to communicate with them, particularly from the U.S., the team partners with an established Indian-based NGO, PRADAN.When were in the U.S ., our communication with the farmers is strictly through PRADAN, Simon says. We are not expecting any big surprises because we usually have weekly conversations with PRADAN. Were really excited to have this summer to give us a chance to examine the value proposition and are very ready to make any changes that they feel meet their needs better. If they want more or less flow, there is a wide variety of things we could alter. Its such a big problem around the world that its really worth getting right.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer.Learn more about the latest energy technologies atASMEs Power and Energy Conference. For Further Discussion Its a great feedback loop, the more sun, the higher the radiance and the hotter it is, the more power you get to the pump.Katherine Taylor, Fellow, Tata Center for Technology and Design

Giving Employees Motivational Recognition

Giving Employees Motivational Recognition Giving Employees Motivational Recognition Have you ever been the employee of the month? Do you have the best website according to a peer vote? Did you get that great parking spot next to the company door for a week or more? Did you win the teamwork award for the quarter, but youre not quite sure why? Chances are, youre a victim of employee recognition that was not motivational and most likely done wrong. Maybe you felt good about the recognition, but co-workers are unlikely to share your joy. Those employees who are not nominated for recognition, and who dont understand the criteria for the bestowal of the reward, are generally negatively impacted by the employee recognition. This is especially frustrating when the employee believes their contribution was equivalent or even better. Or, the employee recognition becomes a joke (must be your turn to be the  employee of the month) or a demotivator (I didnt get nominated so forget it when you need help again sometime). Voted honors are generally a popularity contest, especially when solid criteria for assessment have not been established. Or, if the time necessary to provide an educated vote is unavailable or uncompensated, few will bother to participate. Motivational Employee Recognition Traps You can avoid the employee recognition traps that: Single out one or a few employees who are mysteriously selected for the recognitionSap the morale of the many who failed to win, place, or even showConfuse people who meet the criteria for employee recognition yet were not selectedSeek votes or other personalized, subjective criteria to determine winners. Employee Recognition That Is Motivational and Rewarding Employee recognition is one of the keys to successful employee motivation. Employee recognition follows trust as a factor in employee satisfaction with their supervisor and their workplace. Informal recognition, as simple sometimes as saying thank you and please, should be on every employees mind every day. Supervisors and coworkers, especially, have the opportunity to praise and encourage best efforts daily. These tips will help you successfully provide more formal recognition that is valued, valuable, and motivational. Determine what behaviors your workplace wants to recognize. In a client company, a team decided to recognize teamwork, going the extra mile, and years of service. Another company recognized employees for their contributions to the success of their coworkers.Identify and communicate the criteria by which the proposed recipients will be judged or assessed so that people are clear about what they need to do to qualify for the recognition. (You have to understand what the clear expectations are if you are to have any chance of meeting them. The clearer, the better.) Announce and communicate the recognition and the criteria that you have established for the awards. Give employees the opportunity to ask questions, discuss, and share the meaning of the criteria.Design and communicate the process by which employees will be selected for recognition so that all employees clearly understand the selection process. They will also want to know who will decide, based on the communicated criteria,  who will win  the awards.Allow time for people to qualify for the recognition. Every entry that qualifies for the recognition should receive the recognition. If financial constraints are an issue, either present recognition amounts you can afford. Or, announce all eligible employees, publicly praise them for their contribution, and then, place all names in a drawing to select the lucky winner.Magnify the value of the recognition by these methods: name the employees publicly, place employee names in the newsletter, send out a company-wide email announcement, and so on. Is it ever okay to nominate people or projects and just vote? In my book, only for trivial, fun events and prizes. Nothing of significance should ever be treated as a popularity contest. An example? One client company, in a clean room setting, has groups of employees who decorate external windows surrounding the manufacturing area each holiday season. All employees vote for their favorite window, and a nominal gift goes to the teams that decorated the top three windows. Effective, fair, employee recognition is motivational for both the employees receiving recognition and their coworkers- done correctly.

FIS-B and How It Works

FIS-B and How It Works FIS-B and How It Works FIS-B, short for Flight Information System Broadcast, is a data broadcasting service that works along with ADS-B to allow aircraft operators to receive aeronautical information such as weather and airspace restrictions through a data link to the cockpit. Along with its partner system TIS-B, FIS-B is available at no cost to ADS-B users as part of the FAAs Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). The system gathers information through the use of ADS-B ground stations and radar and delivers that data to an aircrafts onboard cockpit display in the form of weather alerts, airport information and various other reports. FIS-B was created for use by general aviation pilots. How It Works Information for FIS-B is transmitted from ground stations to participating ADS-B In aircraft on a 978 MHz UAT data link. Aircraft that use a 1090 MHz Extended Squitter transponder will not be eligible to receive the FIS-B product. There are currently over 500 operation ground stations that are part of the ADS-B network, and the FAA is working to add approximately 200 additional stations. The aircrafts ADS-B receiver (known as ADS-B In) interprets the data and displays it onto a screen in the cockpit. The actual interface on which FIS-B will be displayed will vary, but it will typically be incorporated into a flight management system or an electronic flight bag (EFB). Equipment Aircraft that want to receive FIS-B information must be equipped with ADS-B Out and ADS-B In equipment. ADS-B requires a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and a transponder when one is not already included with the ASD-B unit. While TIS-B (Traffic Information Service-Broadcast) is available to both 978 MHz UAT and 1090ES transponder users, FIS-B is only broadcast to ADS-B users with a dedicated 978 MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT). FIS-B is not available to aircraft operators that use a 1090ES transponder for ADS-B. Operators using a 1090ES transponder will have to get their weather services and graphics from a third-party source, such as XM WX Satellite Weather. A compatible cockpit display (CDIT) is also needed to display the FIS-B data in a usable format. Limitations FIS-B is strictly an advisory service and is not meant to take the place of standard weather briefings and preflight planning. It is not a substitute for official weather sources such as air traffic control, flight service stations, NOAA or DUATS. FIS-B data link services operate in line-of-sight only. Aircraft receivers must be within the service volume of the ground station to receive FIS-B. Services One of the advantages for pilots using the 978 MHz UAT is that basic FIS-B services will be available to use at no cost, and these services are comparable to an XM weather subscription service. Currently, FIS-B offers the following communications services: Aviation weather products such as METARs, TAFs, winds aloft and NEXRAD precipitation maps.Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) and status updates for special use airspace (SUA).AIRMETs, SIGMETs and convective SIGMETs.Pilot Reports (PIREPs).NOTAMs (Distant and FDC). Future services might include cloud top reports, lightning and turbulence information, and icing forecasts in both textual and graphical depictions. Its expected that these upgraded services will originate from a third-party and might require a subscription fee. All of the services above are updated as they become available and are transmitted every five or ten minutes, depending on the type of information. NEXRAD will be rebroadcast every 2.5 minutes.

Searching While Employed Play It Safe

Searching While Employed Play It Safe Searching While Employed Play It Safe Making a job switch requires balancing ambition and savvy. Follow these five steps to keep your reputation intact and your income secure.Ideally, senior executives have gotten where they are because of a combination of qualities: Personal drive and ambition coexist with the ability to analyze, plan and execute creative tactics with integrity. And when they’ve decided they’re ready to move to new work and opportunities, they exercise the same skills to conduct a confidential job search with decorum and etiquette toward their current employer. What can happen if you’re indiscreet about your job search? The rumor mill can start generating reports about your desire to leave, and your current company may start making plans for your departure without letting you know. There are plenty of clues that can start this cycle of speculation. Supervisors, peers and those who report to you notice more than you might think. Distributing your resume carelessly; changing your workplace behavior; ev en new, aggressive networking habits on sites like LinkedIn can alert those who recruit for your company that “something is up.” And nowadays, online search tools make it even likelier that these indiscretions will be noticed. If you don’t combine confidentiality with consideration during your job search, the consequences at your current job can be awkward or worse. Moreover, it can tarnish your reputation with future employers. How do people view the relationship between their job search and their current work? Over many years in career coaching and career services, I’ve become familiar with the thinking of people in transition. The way they think and behave on the job search can do some funny things to their personal brands. Who are you in transition? Look at the examples below and ask yourself if you are demonstrating the behaviors of a Savvy or Careless, Selfish job seeker:The Selfish, Careless Seeker: “I don’t know about how it should be done, but I deserve to make a change, so I am going to cut out time during the day to search when I should be working for my employer. I’ll do what I need to, both online and offline. I really don’t know if my employer checks online search engines â€" and frankly, I don’t care much anymore. It’s gotten to the point where I just need to get the word out and make a move.”The Savvy Seeker: “My current position is still a priority. Since my integrity is on the line, I will continue to give my current company everything it expects and deserves â€" but I will develop a job-search methodology that lets me be productive but without shortchanging my current employer.”Here are five ways to endanger your current position and compromise your reputation, along with alternatives to reach the same goals with integrity:1. Use company e-mail to interact with recruiters or potential employers without your company’s knowledge.Savvy alternative: Use your own e-mail address and network to conduct your search and rea ch out to prospective employers.2. Use your company phone to communicate with potential employers and recruiters. Savvy alternative: Stick to your home and cell phones for your job search, and only make work-hours calls when you are on a break or at lunch. When you’re on the clock, dedicate your efforts to your current company.3. Let your work performance drift and start underperforming while you focus on your search.Savvy alternative: Keep striving for top results and maintain your performance at work. The top job seekers I have ever coached used the last weeks or months of current employment to “finish strong” and looked at their top performance as a “fiduciary duty.” This attitude fueled a more powerful, productive search.4. Be aggressive and cavalier in communicating your intentions to friends, colleagues and recruiters.Savvy alternative: Know that not everyone has your best interests in mind or will treat your communications as confidential. A senior executive I know once talked to some neighbors and acquaintances in his home about his interest in several area companies. Weeks later a friend who hadn’t been at the party asked him, “I heard you were looking â€" what’s up?” That shocked my executive contact, who said to me, “I didn’t think I had to watch myself.” You do.5. Launch digital posting or fishing expeditions without thinking about the trail you leave behind. More executives than you might believe throw out some “bait” on the Web. Most recruiters can hazard strong guesses where you work, including the ones at your current company.Savvy alternative: Recognize that everything you do may be noticed online. Yes, you need to distribute a powerful resume to open leads, but you should thoroughly research each and every opportunity before you apply. You may have heard that it is easier to get a job when you have a job. That may be true, but only if you have developed a clear plan for your search, a powerful resume and sound pract ices for conducting your search on- and offline. If you keep control of your current job and plan your search not out of desperation but with a clear-cut career goal and focus, searching while employed can be empowering. But new journeys remain rife with danger. If you want to be perceived as the best, execute your job search with savvy and integrity.

How to Write an Effective Internship Cover Letter

How to Write an Effective Internship Cover Letter How to Write an Effective Internship Cover Letter The initial phase of the internship application process begins by submitting a resume, oftentimes accompanied by a cover letter  to positions and employers of interest.  With these documents, applicants then have approximately 30 seconds or less to gain the employer’s attention. With all of the resumes employers receive on a daily basis, I can guarantee you if you don’t impress them with your initial documents, you will never get a chance to move to the next level. Creating a Resume to Apply for an Internship A common question I receive from students is if they need to do a separate resume and cover letter for each employer? If they don’t have a resume, to begin with, creating a resume for each employer of interest may seem like an insurmountable task to accomplish; but it’s really not all that difficult once you get your first resume started. Targeting Your Resume Once you have an initial resume, it’s rather easy to make changes to target it to a particular internship/job or industry.  Looking at the keywords in the position description can give you a good indication as to the type of skills required to do the job and what keywords you will want to include in your resume.  For undergraduates, many internships seek candidates that possess specific transferable skills, such as communication, interpersonal, organization, computer, and leadership. To illustrate your competency you can focus on your coursework, previous internships and jobs, and any club or volunteer activities in which you have participated. Although resumes being used for specific positions and industries can be almost identical, you will definitely want to include more specific information in your cover letter.  A cover letter is where you can let an employer know your interests and specific reasons why you want to work for their specific company. Oftentimes it’s quite easy to find this information by looking at the internship description while other times you will want to take a look at the company’s website and look over their mission statement to see what the employer’s business is all about.  By identifying what an employer is seeking in a qualified candidate, you can begin focusing your cover letter on exactly what the employer is looking for. Finding Internships Online You may also decide to search sites such as Google, Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com, Idealist.org, or other sites where you can find information about just any type of internship you are looking for.  You may also check with your college to see if they offer Careershift, which provides every position on every job board that exists online. Be sure to use the Advanced Search Options on these sites to ensure that you are getting a filtered, and more targeted list of internships. You may include specific keywords, a particular industry or job function, a location plus other criteria that will help to keep the listings to exactly what you are looking for. You may also sign up for sites or an employer’s email or newsletter to receive information when new listings come available.  This may seem like a lot of work but once you get the hang of it you will find yourself saving time by being more organized.  I often recommend that students use a spreadsheet where they can list all of the internships they are interested and the deadlines to apply.  Once they begin applying, they will want to keep track of those positions they have applied for. Some sites let you save these sites right on their website which also makes it a whole lot easier to stay organized and follow up. Targeting Your Cover Letter If you have several areas of interest you will want to have several resume and cover letters prepared.  You will always want to have a section of your cover letter that speaks directly to the employer.  You want them to understand that you know what they are about and you want to list exactly what knowledge and skills you have to offer the company. With so many applicants for each position, it is the applicant’s responsibility to convey their strengths and abilities that speak directly to what the company is looking for in an applicant.

A corporation is a business entity considered to be a legal person that is distinct from the shareholders who own it. A corporation can borrow money, pay taxes, hire employees, commence or be subject to a lawsuit, and own property. The shareholders may participate in the corporate profits through the payment of dividends. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a corporation when compared to other business entities? The biggest advantage of an incorporation is limited liability for shareholders. Under law, a corporation is considered to be a legal person that is distinct from the shareholders who own it. This means that individual shareholders are not personally liable for the debts and obligations of the corporation. If a corporation fails, the shareholders will lose the amount of equity invested with their shares. One disadvantage of a corporation is that income is taxed at two levels: first on income for the corporate entity, and then at the shareholder level where shareholders are taxed on any dividends they have received. Can I use LawDepots Incorporation Package to start a non-profit society or charity? LawDepots Florida Incorporation Package is currently restricted to for-profit businesses seeking to incorporate with the Government of Florida. Contact PersonWho is the contact person? A contact person is a person who authorizes registration of this corporation. The contact person may be contacted by LawDepot staff, Registry Agents, the Government of Florida, or the IRS if additional details are required regarding this incorporation. May not contain language that states or implies that the corporation is connected with a state or federal government agency or a corporation chartered under the laws of the United States. Must be distinguishable from the names of all other entities or filings organized, registered, or revised under the laws of Florida. What elements should I include in my Corporate Name? A Corporate name should ideally consist of three parts: A distinctive element, i.e. XYZ. A term that describes the business dealings of the corporation, i.e. Distribution. Your choice of suffix, i.e. Inc. In the above example, the corporations name would be XYZ Distribution Inc. While there are marketing and trademark advantages that the name contain a distinctive element and describe the business dealings of the Corporation, there is no legal requirement for either. What difference must exist for a name to be unique? Every corporate name must be unique. The Government of Florida will not allow you to register a corporate name that is identical or confusingly similar to the name of another corporation, limited partnership or LLC. A corporate name is not unique if it is different from another corporate name merely due to: The addition or deletion of punctuation marks or spaces, The insertion or removal of a year in the name, The substitution of a word for its abbreviation or an abbreviation for its word, The substitution of a word for its homonym (a word that sounds identical), The addition or deletion of an article (the, a, etc.), The addition or deletion of the phrase of Florida, A difference in suffix (Miracle Snacks Incorporated would not be considered different from Miracle Snacks Company), or Any other change that does not produce a phonetic difference between the names. For example, the name The E-Z Heating Shop Inc. would not be considered distinct from the name Easy Heating Shop Corporation. What happens if the name I choose is already registered? Directors do not need to be residents of Florida or shareholders of the corporation, unless the articles of incorporation or corporate bylaws make so require. The articles of incorporation and/or corporate bylaws can set additional requirements for directors. What is an Officer? An Officer is someone who ordinarily works in the management functions of the corporation. 12 Privacy Mistakes that Can Cost You Your Job in 2018

12 Privacy Mistakes that Can Cost You Your Job in 2018 12 Privacy Mistakes that Can Cost You Your Job in 2018 Does the name Ashley Payne sound familiar? If yes, that’s because you’ve probably read about her before : Payne, a teacher in Winder, Georgia, made news for being fired when she posted a picture of herself holding a glass of wine in one hand and a pint of beer in the other on social media. Although this picture was posted on her personal social media account, it didn’t matter. Apparently, a parent saw her social media post and wasn’t too pleased with Payne drinking on her private time and posting about it on social media. The unsatisfied parent went ahead to complain to the school board, and this cost Payne her job. Payne was soon summoned to the office of the head teacher at the school she worked and the interaction went something like this: Head teacher : Do you have a Facebook page? Head teacher : Do you have any pictures of yourself up there with alcohol? Head teacher : Resign or be suspended. Now, we can start to debate what Payne’s mistake was: Having a Facebook page? Billions of people do! Drinking alcohol? Billions of people do, too? Posting personal pictures on her personal Facebook page? Well, billions of people do too! Payne’s mistake was simple: not taking her privacy, especially in an online and social media world, seriously. And it cost her her job! In an interview with a publication, she said: “ I just want to be back in the classroom, if not that classroom, a classroom. I want to get back doing what I went to school for, my passion in life .” In Payne’s case, teaching is her passion - her career… her dream. Yet, a simple privacy mistake cost her more than she had anticipated. Like Payne, countless people have lost their jobs due to easily-avoidable privacy mistakes . Countless people have lost their career. Don’t make the following privacy mistakes in 2018, or they could cost you your career: When it comes to the Internet and social media, it is important to realize that nothing is truly private. Of course, there are privacy measures and checks and balances that can be taken to ensure your privacy, and those will be discussed in this article, but it is important to realize that once it is online, no matter how apparently private, there’s a possibility that it could be seen by anybody and everybody. Multibillion dollar ecommerce sites, that have full-time staff dedicated to ensuring the security of their platform, have been hacked - often resulting in loss of billions of dollars and even entire businesses being shut down. If that could happen, know that there’s at least a chance that what you put online - even with good privacy settings - could come out into the open. In Payne’s case, further research shows that she actually had privacy settings in place, but a friend without privacy settings enabled re-posted her picture, and things spiralled from there. The danger in not informing yourself about your workplace’s privacy policy cannot be overstated. Going back to our case study for this article, Ashley Payne, she did absolutely nothing wrong - at least nothing illegal or that she should be terminated for. However, further digging shows that there was a policy that states that employees can be disciplined for postings on social media (including use of alcohol or “anything students are not supposed to do”). In essence, her school had a policy against Payne’s action. Payne would later sue her school district because she wasn’t “made aware of her rights.” You don’t want to make the mistake of being ignorant about your workplace’s privacy policy - it could cost you big time. Stories abound of people being axed from their jobs due to posting something on social media that a colleague or a superior who was friends with them on social media found in violation of company policy. No matter how close you think you are, it might be a good idea to reconsider adding people from professional circles as friends on your personal profiles - even with strong privacy settings, they will still be able to see your updates since they are friends, and, depending on how they react, things could get out of control. Many people are not aware of their social media privacy settings - or even that such exist. Big mistake! If you are not aware of your social media privacy settings, or have not personally configured it, it might be a good idea to stay off social media. Anything you post on social media can be seen, shared or distributed - depending on your privacy settings - and this could have an immediate effect on your job as well as your future career prospects. When it comes to taking care of privacy settings, it is easy to focus only on online and social media accounts you are currently actively using. This is ignoring the big picture. It is important to know that when being considered for sensitive new roles or a new job, a complete background check is likely to be done on you. In other words, insensitive posts you’ve made years ago (that you didn’t think much about) could surface, and they could threaten your career. The solution is to first do this background check yourself, clean up what needs to be cleaned up, tighten your privacy settings and be careful about what you’ll be posting going forward. Yes, there’s such a thing as being too private. With all the news about people being axed from their jobs due to posting private stuff, it’s easy to want to toe a line of not having an online presence at all. That could be a big, career-threatening mistake. According to hiring managers , when they try to look up a potential job candidate and find absolutely nothing - in essence, a “ghost” - they immediately send the candidate’s resume to the bottom of the pile. In other words, don’t go totally incognito; instead, have a presence and keep it completely protected. In a world rife with hackers, eavesdroppers and malicious people waiting to snoop in on your online activities, it will be a very dangerous mistake not to educate yourself about measures to protect yourself and encrypt your data whenever you access the internet - especially on public networks. This is even more important if you are allowed access to sensitive information on your company network. “Using public Wi-Fi without a VPN can be very dangerous. While you innocently just want to get some work done on the commute, or at the cafe, for all you know someone could be eavesdropping. It doesn’t have to cost much. It could even be a script kiddie ,” says John Mason from The Best VPN . Many organizations have a BYOD policy, often ensuring that sensitive portions of the organization’s network are only accessible through the company’s own devices whose privacy settings have been fine-tuned to prevent security issues. Unfortunately, a lot of employees ignore these policies and go ahead to access sensitive parts of the company’s network on personal devices. Not only could this pose a threat to your company that could cost you your job, but it could actually result in legal action being taken against you. Many people wrongly assume that all it takes to protect access to their computer is a secure password. This is not necessarily the case. If, due to not taking adequate measures to secure your computer (for example, not installing an antivirus, an anti-malware and a firewall), your computer is compromised, someone from another part of the world could literally be seeing what you’re doing every time you are connected to the Internet. A great case study is the infamous eBay hack that resulted in over 100 million accounts being compromised. This was only possible because access to the computers of three key eBay employees had been compromised. So you need training on the right way to use email, eh? Uhmm, yes! While many people believe using email is as simple as knowing how to use email clients, it’s not that simple. Some of the most common security issues occur via email, and this could threaten your career prospects. This includes phishing attempts (which can be used to steal sensitive company-related credentials as well as personal information from you) as well as the fact that not being weary about which link you click in emails could result in malware (or worse, ransomware!) being installed on your computer, or on company servers. This could have serious, far-reaching consequences. In an interview of 27 cybersecurity experts, when asked what the most common cybersecurity mistakes were, by far the number one mistake relates to password usage. In essence, as an employee, if the password is compromised, sensitive information about you or your organization could be accessed and that can have far-reaching consequences. Some common expert suggestions include: Mobile phone apps, computer applications, websites and social media sites are constantly asking for location information now. If allowed access, many of these websites and apps will tag your messages and activities with your location. This isn’t necessarily good. Cases abound of people having lost their jobs due to failing to protect their location information.

Dr. Woodys Tips to Jumpstart Your Job Search - FlexJobs

Dr. Woody’s Tips to Jumpstart Your Job Search - FlexJobs Dr. Woody’s Tips to Jumpstart Your Job Search - 5Last week, we held our Weekly Twitter Chat where we help job seekers with any questions or concerns they have about their job search. Dr. Michael “Woody” Woodward joined us and gave some excellent advice on jump starting your job search. Dr. Woody is a career expert and the author of The YOU Plan, a fantastic book that encourages job seekers to take a step back and look into what may be holding them back by providing a five-step career guide to help the unemployed take charge. Our Twitter Chat was lively and full of fantastic advice for job seekers. We’ve distilled this chat into something that all job seekers can refer to for tips and tricks to jump start their job search. @: Ok, lets get started! Today’s topic: Jumpstart Your Job Search. Our Guest: career coach author of The YOU Plan @DrWoody!  We’ll be asking Dr. Woody questions about jumpstarting your job search. @DrWoody: Hey everyone! Im an organizational psychologist, coach and author of The YOU Plan. Im happy to answer any questions dont be shy! @: If youve been job searching for a while without success, how do you begin to get out of your rut? @DrWoody: Step Back! A common mistake is searching without a strategy. Search w/ purpose! Start with a basic plan or revisit your plan if its not working. All too often job seekers want to put the cart before the horse. @BreezyMamaSite: And a gap in the resume? Any advice for moms who hope to get back to work? @DrWoody: Always try to reconcile gaps! Think about any volunteer activities or personal development that you may have done during that time. Dont ignore gaps because theyll ask. Address your timeline by talking about what you did during that time! When dealing with a gap be honest, but also try to demonstrate active engagement. @wardogsRI: Ive been looking on my own for awhile now by following the methods in the Richard Bolles book, What Color is Your Parachute. Any favorite tips in it?  @DrWoody: First of all I would recommend The YOU Plan . In all seriousness to go back to question #1 and consider the following four steps: 1) Determine your destination â€" Articulate what you are specifically looking for. People dont do this enough! How would you outline or describe the job you want? You need to have clear destination! Name it and own it. Also, think about how others would describe the job you are seeking. Are there other names or it other places it exists? 2) Identify Targets â€" Research where the opportunities are that align with your destination Think about the potential places that job exists â€" the variety of industries, regional areas, professions, types of companies. Always start broad! Dont be afraid of looking broadly for where your ideal job may exist. Take the blinders off! 3) Identify Relationships â€" Who do you know who can help? The job market has and always will be about Who You Know! 4) Draw your roadmap â€" Set daily, weekly, and monthly goals that include who you are going to meet, where to search, etc @: If you want to break into a new industry, how can you get started? How can you find a career you’re passionate about?  @DrWoody: My rule has always been to find the people who have the job you want and hang out with them . In other words, find ways to immerse yourself in the new industry! Two things: Research and Infiltrate! 1) Research â€" Read trade publications, get on industry chats and forums, check press articles, etc. 2) Infiltrate â€" Join professional associations, use LinkedIn to get connected w/ insiders, go to industry events. @tacytorres: Any advice for someone who may not know how their skill set applies outside existing job? Being in the same job in the same company for many years can bring this insecurity. And then to be laid off, it can be hard to figure out where you fit back into the workplace. @: Perhaps volunteering, finding internships/apprenticeships, or attending industry events/conferences in new fields. @DrWoody: You have to learn to translate! Chances are more skills apply than you realize.  Research the position and learn the language of the industry and company. Many miss opportunities because they dont take the time or effort to translate into industry jargon. For example, military veterans who were officers have great project management skills but dont call it that. They need to translate their skills from the military to their new industry. @: If youre a member, we offer skills tests to figure out which new skills youll need for a new field/job. @DrWoody: Skills tests are a great way to start! @: There is a government website, O*NET Online, which helps match your current skills with other careers that use those skills: onetonline.org/skills/. @DrWoody: You may have to think about a new career or options different that what you did before. Our BIG thanks to Dr. Woody for joining our Twitter Chat. Be sure to check out’ Weekly Twitter Chats, every Wednesday at 1:30pm ET. Even if you’re not on Twitter it’s a great way to try it out and help your job search at the same time!

Combatting Age Discrimination in the Job Search Part III of III

Combatting Age Discrimination in the Job Search Part III of III Combatting Age Discrimination in the Job Search Part III of III The third and final article in a three-part series on conducting a job search later in life. Age discrimination doesn’t disappear once you’ve made it to the interviewing phase with a job opportunity. Read on for tips to help you maneuver around interview questions designed to reveal your age.Interviewing and Follow-UpBefore you head into an interview, do your research. Visit Vault, Glassdoor and the company’s employment page on the web to get a better sense of the company culture. If you have any connections to the company, reach out to them for an informational interview to help you prepare. Depending on the company, you may need to adjust your interview wardrobe. For instance, if you walked into an interview at Google wearing a full suit and tie, you would look out of place. Set a Google News Alert for the company in the days leading up to the interview so you stay up-to-date with relevant news.Know your rights. There are certain questions that are off-limits â€" including th ose about your age. Oftentimes the interviewer isn’t aware of these laws, and is naively trying to break the ice by asking about your family, which may lead to inappropriate questions. In these cases, the best thing to do is redirect the question back to the interviewer. For instance, if they ask about your marital status, you can reply by saying, “It sounds like family is important to you. Are you married?” You’ve kept up the friendly chitchat without having to divulge any information about your personal life. You are not required to submit a photo ID (which has your date of birth on it) during the interview process. If asked, you can simply not include it when filling out the initial forms, or tell the interviewer that you have concerns about identity theft and would prefer not to hand it over until it’s determined whether or not you will be joining their team. Keep the conversation light and friendly â€" you don’t need to come off as angry or defensive. Be conscious of how you answer even the simplest of questions, such as “Are you at least 18 years of age?” If you make a joke about your age, you are drawing negative attention to it.Prepare to overcome any objections you expect to hear in the interview, such as your salary requirements. Don’t be afraid to be proactive during the interview to ensure no assumptions are made about your candidacy. Interviewers will often assume your near-term plan involves retirement, which may not be the case at all. If they don’t ask about your long-term plans, bring it up. Make sure the employer knows you’re in it for the long haul, recommends Elizabeth Mixson, career coach for Ladders, and explain how this role fits into your long-term plans. Also, stress your flexibility regarding work hours and availability for travel. Candidates with young families may not have as much flexibility to offer, Mixson points out, so emphasize your ability to work outside of the conventional nine-to-five box.Consider your experience and wisdom to be a competitive advantage, advises human resources development representative Ben Puffer. Sell your track record and relevant accomplishments (i.e., your ability to deliver results) to show the interviewer what you’re capable of doing for the organization. They’re getting a bargain by hiring someone with your track record â€" show them your potential value.Mixson also noted that enthusiasm is a big way to differentiate. Speak passionately and sincerely about the role and the company, she advises. Taking the “been there, done that” approach is rarely effective. It’s up to you to convey your willingness to work hard to get the job done. Don’t assume the interviewer will ask you about your drive. This is no magic bullet that will suddenly land you a job tomorrow. But there are things you can do to make yourself a more attractive candidate with a better shot at landing that job. Focus on building a personal brand, online and face to face, that posit ions you as full of energy and vitality, in touch with technology and current with industry news. Develop a resume that supports your job goals today, and utilize your network to identify opportunities for employee referrals.Check out the following link for more information on interviewing and navigating the job search later in life.*Note: click on the following links to access Part I and Part II of this series.
